A well educated child can bring great changes in the society while enjoying its fruits – living wisely, comfortably and mentoring the next generations.
But, all the people are not able to enjoy this status.
Why?
Every child is not blessed with the facility of pursuing studies in a learning environment which is interesting enough to hold their continuity
Why? Can’t we find such schools around the state?
We can. But they are not affordable for every financial class.
Can a student with poor financial support ever enjoy such effective education?
To prove it ‘yes’, TeluguOne Foundation goes functional here with the object - Quality education for all. |
What is adopting a school? |
Setting up the Digital Knowledge Center is one of the ideal ways to adopt a school and to observe the progress of students periodically. |
Benefits of this program are manifold and explained simply –
|
- A student can learn more with fewer efforts.
- Helps teacher as a multimedia tool to explain critical topics.
- The fund raised to help two can serve many.
- Government’s aim is to provide free education for all. This program adds value to that.
- The number of dropouts will be less and lays a strong foundation for higher studies.
|
How DKC (DigitalKnowledgeCenter) works? |
As discussed above LearnOne – The Digital Knowledge Canter is the pedagogy with technical advantage. Briefly, it is a knowledge repository of rich media content which can be accessed anytime on demand. Please find the complete picture here. |
|
|
Apart from conventional oral explanation with examples, the thought process includes the training by means of – |
- Sketches
- Diagrams and play mode puzzles
- Maps
- Photographs
- Satellite videos
- Audio / Video Tapes
- Animated content with examples
|
Pedagogy: |
Content from the best teaching sources and activity based modules include
- video shoot of an interactive session along with animations
- graphics and video clips filled with information of places wherever required, will be incorporated creating world class content
- syllabus recommended to 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th class students
Though the content offered is approved by the Government, these are the things they hardly find as part of their core curriculum.
For example, a lesson in 7th Class English Text Book prescribed by Board of Secondary Education, explains the usage of hovercraft as a means transport on plain lands and water. But it failed to give an exact visual of the object. |
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then moving picture should naturally worth a lot. |
The Foundation works in association with AID India, APSCERT and Azim Premji Foundation etc. in sharing, developing and designing the content. |
Lessons on time, on the campus and on demand |
TeluguOne.com and Verismo Networks use their expertise in creating, collecting and encoding video files and dissemination of content in the following ways to provide students with video lessons of high quality. |
|
To achieve this, students do not need to go to any center. Instead, modules of rich media content can be delivered right in their classroom from a content hub.
Conventional system of “lessons through audio/video” devices also serves the purpose but one has to watch a video lesson based on transmission schedule and irrespective of their course plan. Since the repository serves the desired topic one can demand the DKC to learn a specific topic purposefully. |
Technology |
Usage of IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) technology for e-learning is first of its kind in India. Video files are stored in a content repository in the form of windows media files.
The delivery of content to the adopted schools or e-learning is possible in the following two ways: |
- TV equipped with set top box
- Computer System as an interface
|
Using the Content Repository for dual purpose: |
|
Using DKC within a classroom
|
- 5 TVs with set-top boxes are set up one in each classroom
- Each TV will be connected to the repository through a set-top box
- Whole class can get access to the knowledge repository
Advantages
- All students within the class can use it
- No separate space for library is required
- Teacher can use it as an additional aid in explaining the lesson
- It can be operated easily since everyone is familiar with using TV nowadays
- This set up makes the session more interactive
- Can also be used for conducting vocational training / teacher training programs/ agriculture related sessions for unemployed youth, ladies, teachers and farmers
|
Using a computer system
|
- 6 computer systems are connected to the knowledge base.
- Each machine will be provided with one video interface (monitor) and two audio output devices (headsets)
- 10 students can refer to the content – 2 students per system
Advantages
- Student can note the key points and download the essentials
- Students get acquainted with usage of computers
- A student who misses the classroom session can cover up the same using computer
As a pilot project, LearnOne program has been started off last month in Z.P. High Schools of Mopidevi Mandal, Krishna District. |
Advancements and other advantages: |
- We will work out the machine – student ratio by reviewing the pilot project
- Additional approach will be sorted out to make the program more effective
- Interested students who are not studying in respective schools can also avail the facility of learning computers after the School hours or whenever it is feasible.
- The same infrastructure can be used for seasonal programs and other awareness programs conducted by the I&PR department and Government for Farmers, Adult education, Govt. Employee training etc.
- Teacher training can be made easy – Programs conducted by SSA and Ministry of School Education to upgrade the teaching skills of teachers has become a tedious and expensive job nowadays. With this arrangement they can be trained up at their ease.
|
Note:
- Power interruption and unavailability of internet access are the general shortcomings of the program. However, the frequent update of set-top box enables them to work offline and watch large number of lessons.
- Government of AP is planning to connect all the schools through internet in the year 2008. This opens new vistas in using DKCs. For example knowledge sharing between schools, online tests etc would take place and real interactive learning environment can be envisaged. Donors can have direct access to the school they have adopted.
- Adaptability of set-top box to the TV for the sole purpose of DKC avoids the misuse of equipment.
- No maintenance of library, CDs or Cassettes
